Conference on Managing Sediments in the Watershed: Bringing Dredged Material and Watershed Managers Together

The National Dredging Team (NDT) and Subcommittee on Integrated Management of Ocean Resources (SIMOR) will host this conference August 29-31, 2006, at the Doubletree Hotel & Executive Meeting Center Portland-Lloyd Center in Portland, Oregon

Conference Objectives:

  • Facilitate dialogue among dredged material and watershed managers
  • Identify steps needed to include dredged material and sediment managers in watershed plans
  • Identify steps needed to include a broader watershed perspective in dredged material management planning

Increased coordination among dredged material, sediment, and watershed managers may result in:

  • Economic and ecological benefits
  • Decreased need for dredging and dredged material disposal sites
  • Increased leveraging of funds, and  increased sharing of technical and regulatory capabilities
  • More efficient permitting for dredging projects
  • Reduction of contaminants entering aquatic ecosystems
  • Reduction of soil loss and waterbody siltation
  • Increased beneficial uses of dredged material

SIMOR Workshop

In addition to co-sponsoring the Conference on Managing Sediments in the Watershed: Bringing Dredged Material and Watershed Managers Together, the Subcommittee on Integrated Management of Ocean Resources (SIMOR) will hold an afternoon workshop on August 31st to provide conference attendees and other interested stakeholders an opportunity to learn about, and provide feedback on, SIMOR and other U.S. Ocean Action Plan initiatives. The workshop will also serve to bring Federal and Regional representatives together to discuss conference "next steps" in the context of U.S. Ocean Action Plan activities and to identify opportunities for collaboration. Registrants for the conference on Managing Sediments in the Watershed may sign up for the SIMOR Workshop at no additional charge.
